Sleeping Under Clouds: Sue Wallace-Shaddad and Sula Rubens

Sue first met the artist Sula Rubens in late 2019. This led to their collaboration over lockdown and beyond. Sue would write poems about Sula’s paintings in her art catalogue, discuss these with her and then redraft. Both poems and paintings focus on the experience of children who have been displaced or are on the move. The poems dwell on journeying, kinship, nurture and survival. Often the children in the paintings are at play or tending animals and the poems respond to these aspects of daily life. The poetry and art book Sleeping Under Clouds, published by Clayhanger Press, has resulted from this collaboration.

Sue attended John McCullough’s Advanced Poetry Workshops in 2022. Read more about the course.
