THE Advanced Poetry Workshops
Online, 10 or 20-week courses.
The Advanced Poetry Workshops are a higher-level course designed for writers with prior experience of working in poetry groups, published poets or writers who have attended poetry writing courses as part of higher education courses and who would like to continue exploring their professional practice, writing technique and style in practical writing sessions.
Overview
The programme is delivered through weekly seminars which run for 2.5 hours and are run by Dr John McCullough, who has published numerous collections and is well-known as being an energetic and enthusiastic teacher.
The course covers drafting and editing poems, experimental poetic forms and creating original imagery together with sending out poems to magazines and publishers, building a profile and readership and assembling collections of poetry. Each class will include writing exercises, a discussion on the week’s topic led by the tutor. Half the sessions will include workshopping fellow students’ work, with the idea that one learns as much from critiquing others’ work as one does from writing oneself.
The group will meet weekly to explore and discuss aspects of poetic technique or to review work in progress. There will be opportunities for poets to present work, ideas and practical exercises and to suggest topics for discussion, should they so wish. The emphasis will be on practical writing in the class as well as critiquing work in progress. Between meetings, you will be able to share work and raise questions around writing technique with other writers in the group through the online student forum.
What is required of me?
You will need to have access to a computer with email and an internet connection as the programme uses an online learning site to allow students to keep in touch outside of the taught sessions. For the classes, your computer must have a built-in camera as the workshops are held on Zoom.
For writers joining the online programme from outside the UK a good grasp of the English language is essential as all the discussions and writing on the course will be in English. We are excited about working with writers from more diverse backgrounds both geographically and culturally.
"This was a superb, well-crafted review of a wide range of modern poetry. I enjoyed a terrific learning experience which has enriched my own writing."
